Bobby Gersten Announces “Walk for Health”
UNC’s oldest living basketball and baseball player to promote physical fitness by walking from the campus to Finley golf course.
Chapel Hill – March, 2015 – Bobby Gersten will lead the “2015 Walk for Health” on Saturday, April 11, 2015. The walk will begin 12 noon at the tennis courts at Jackson Hall and finish at Finley golf course. THIEF OF HEARTS will perform at the UNC General Administration parking area, the midpoint of the Walk. Thief of Hearts will perform at the UNC General Administration parking area, the midpoint of the Walk. Thief of Hearts is a local entertainment group specializing in live performances of favorite oldies, beach and Motown hits. Also confirmed to perform are the Orange County Jammers, a senior citizen cheerleading team.
Walkers of all ages are welcome to participate. The objective of this event is three-fold: 1) encourage youth participation in recreational activities 2) promote a life-long interest in maintaining physical fitness and 3) publicly demonstrate that walking is the best physical fitness.
Obesity, a leading contributor to death, is tied to chronic, costly diseases, including diabetes and high blood pressure. According to the Stroke Association, walking briskly for up to 30 minutes can help prevent and control the high blood pressure that can cause strokes – reducing your risk by up to 27 per cent.
“The best way to lead is by example. Everybody wants longevity. Bobby is the epitome of healthy long-living. This ‘Walk for Health’ will be the most beneficial learning experience for the UNC community ever. After all, it’s physical fitness that keeps us alive,” comments event promoter, William Thorpe.
The first 100 people to register will receive an official walk t-shirt. You will also receive periodic “Walk for Health” updates and communications.
Walkers are encouraged to use designated, free park and ride shuttles from the Friday Center across from Meadowmont on N.C. 54. The shuttles will begin running at 11:00 a.m. and will continue until walkers depart Finley golf course (approximately 2:30p.m.)
