“The Great-Granddaddy of UNC Athletics”
96-year-old UNC athletic legend Bobby Gersten will lead a fun exercise event and Final Four pre-game pep rally/parade to promote physical fitness and support the Tar Heels – with special hometown tribute to Oxford, NC native and team captain Isaiah Hicks, who will be playing in his penultimate college game.

WHO: Bobby Gersten, the University of North Carolina’s oldest living basketball and baseball player (Class of ’42). The event is sponsored by UNC Walk for Health, a year-round initiative that aims to raise awareness of and provide practical solutions to chronic health conditions.
WHAT: Bobby G. will lead college students and whoever else wants to join in a ½ mile fun exercise event and pre-Final Four game pep rally/parade to promote physical fitness and support Carolina basketball. Everyone is welcome to participate.
WHEN: Noon – Saturday, April 1. (weather permitting)
BEGIN: Old Well – University of North Carolina
BROADCAST COVERAGE: UNC STV and Tupelo Raycom, a content creator for ESPN
WHY: Bobby Gersten, who played basketball and baseball at UNC and has remained a key part of the university’s athletic program (he was instrumental in bringing Dean Smith to UNC!) is a fierce advocate for physical fitness. At 96, he still exercises daily. His Fun Run/Walk/Dance event aims to encourage youth participation in recreational activities, promote a life-long interest in maintaining physical fitness and publicly demonstrate that walking is the best physical fitness.
