UNC Walk for Health Co-Founder goes coast to coast
on a solo triathlon to promote physical fitness.
William Thorpe, co-founder of UNC Walk for Health, is hitting the road on an 11-state, 3,000 mile solo triathlon from Carolina Beach to Venice Beach within an 11-day period to promote swimming, cycling, and running.
Thorpe (and whoever else wants to join in) will run and ride on local bicycle routes in selected cities. This fun cross-country solo triathlon will pass through major cities like Raleigh, Greensboro, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles.
When: Begin: Noon – Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Carolina Beach, NC
Why: To encourage healthier lifestyles and exercise at any age and thus improve the quality of life. Many Americans suffer from costly chronic diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, as a result of a lack of physical fitness. The Solo Triathlon across America seeks to inspire others to spend fewer hours in a cubicle and fewer hours on a couch and spend more time exercising.

Dip bike rear wheel in Atlantic Ocean. Bicycle provided by Shore Break Bikes of Carolina Beach, NC.
Day 2 – 9/21/17 Raleigh: “The Brickyard” at North Carolina State University featuring 97-year-old Bobby Gersten – Dancing with Delta Zeta Sorority members and playing tennis.
Day 3 – 9/22/17 Greensboro: Trek Bicycle Store
Day 4 – 9/23/17 Knoxville: Tennessee Valley Bicycles. Nashville
Day 5 – 9/24/17 Memphis: Visit the National Civil Rights Museum (former Lorraine Motel) – site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day 6 – 9/25/17 Little Rock: Visit the studio of CBS-TV affiliate – THV11
Day 7 – 9/26/17 Oklahoma City: Schlegel Bicycles
Day 8 – 9/27/17 Albuquerque: The Bike Smith
Day 9 – 9/28/17 Solo Triathlon break for sleep and rest
Day 10 – 9/29/17 Los Angeles: Visit world-renowned comedy clubs to promote laughter as a form of exercise. Note: Studies have shown that after just 15 minutes of hysterical or deep belly laughing, people got the same vascular benefit as they would from spending 15 to 30 minutes at the gym
Day 11 – 9/30/17 Venice Beach, CA: Dip bike front wheel in Pacific Ocean.
